Are Memes Art?

Memes are definitely a form of art. Memes could be considered art because they are often relatable. They are also a form of entertainment. I would say memes is a good thing for the Art community because its a brand new way to express what you  are currently feeling or what is making you smile. Memes have created an opportunity for many to communicate with each other, we do this by sharing memes on facebook, retweeting on twitter, or posting on instagram.

Some of my favorite memes:

This one is my favorite because it is something that I deal with on the daily. The caption can also be replaced with “me at school” instead of work but it applies to that as well.

All my favorite memes have to deal with sleep. It seems to be a reoccurring theme. It’s quite funny because I barely get enough sleep in the first place.

Memes make me happy and are partially a reason as to why I get little to no sleep.

DS106 Assignments

From the Design Assignment category, I chose the Create your own logo assignment. I chose this assignment because as someone who is trying to startup their career as an entrepreneur, I believe that having an original logo that is unique to who your are and what your brand is, it stamps your brand as official. It also shows others that you are serious about your business. It wouldn’t be a difficult was to complete, especially if it s something that you are passionate about. Learning to use photoshop would be the hardest part for me, but it is something I want to be an expert on. Another app I would be interested in using is the SketchBook app from the App Store. I recently been playing around with it, practicing, attempting to create something.

From the Writing Assignment category I chose the Write an Alternative Ending assignment. There has always been those times where you wish your favorite movie, short film, or book had a different ending that felt right to you. With this assignment, it lets your creative juices flow and allows for many possible outcomes. It would help with the idea of storytelling because it allows us to create something unique and every ending will be different because we all think different. We could apply these skills to the digital world to create our own stories.

Class First Impressions

CT 101 being an early class, I already knew that I was going to have a hard time staying awake. Mostly because I have to wake up at 8am to get to class on time and I have a late night shift on Monday so I don’t get enough sleep.

This is me during the first hour of class on Tuesdays:

During the second hour of class when we start working on our assignment :

and finally when class is over:

Overall I am really looking forward to learning more in class. By the assignments we are given I feel like this will be a fun semester.

Boycotts in 2018

Recently Nike added Colin Kaepernick to its latest “Just Do It” campaign. Kaepernick being a controversial icon, the aftermath of the announcement sparked social media. Outraged Nike customers made up for some great memes on twitter.

Outraged Customers:

Memes that follow:

At the time I was confused and laughing to myself at the thought that these people are damaging their Nike wear, it makes no sense because they still bought the product , so Nike isn’t getting hurt by their form of protest. Which is hilarious in so many ways.

This is just one example and there are many more that are lingering on twitter, this is one of the few that had me chuckling on my train ride home from work.

VaporWave Pt. 2

In class I decided to create VaporWave once again but this time I used Photoshop. I must say that having and using Photoshop is a huge advantage. It is just so simple to use and everything is direct and straightforward. For this I took some inspiration from my last creation. I went with something minimalistic and not so crazy looking.  For example. I used laser beams but also had transparent lasers in the background. this time I didn’t add the dolphins or palm trees.

Song Review: Love Yourz by J. Cole

In J. Cole’s 2014 Forest Fills Drive, the song Love Yourz is one of the more slow jazz toned songs of the album .

Here he is telling the story of how sometimes the fairytale life of being wealthy and successful isn’t always the best. He encourages many to be happy with what they got because some people might have it worse or have nothing at all.

He goes on to trying to give advice to the fans and people who look up to him.

Always gon’ be a bigger house somewhere, but ni**a feel me
‘Long as the people in that motherfucker love you dearly
Always gon’ be a whip that’s better than the the one you got
Always gon’ be some clothes that’s fresher than the one’s you rock
Always gon’ be a bitch that’s badder out there on the tours
But you ain’t never gon’ be happy till you love yours

J. Cole’s message is that you will never be happy, no matter the amount of fame and money, until you learn to appreciate and love what you currently have. So there will always be a better car, clothes, girl but that won’t mean anything if you fail to realize that what you have may be enough.

Jermaine also understands the struggles that people in poverty face while they see all these Hip Hop artist flashing there wealth with money and jewelery and them not having anything. He was apart of them when he was younger, dreaming about a life with no stress, where money would solve all his problems and live stress free.

J Cole expresses that money has not only fixed many problems, they also created new ones. He is rich, but at what cost, he isn’t happy with what he has because he failed to appreciate what he once had back when he was “broke”. The phrase “Think being broke was better” is said silently throughout the song. It emphasizes the idea that he was most happiest when he was broke because that was when he received the most love. Now when people call him up to talk they usually ask for some money. He no longer receives the same love he used to get and all because he is famous and wealthy.

Overall, this album in general is one of J. Cole’s greatest albums. It went double platinum without any features. It was a huge deal because it had been 25 years that a solo hip hop artist went platinum with no featured guest artist.

If you want to listen to the album the link is below to Apple Music to preview the songs.

My VaporWave Attempt :(

This was my first attempt at creating VaporWave.

To start off, I did not have Photoshop to create this. I used an app called Sketchbook on the Mac. Now this app was very tedious in ways that I almost gave up creating my work. I kept on opening new canvases because I didn’t fully understand how the app worked. So I youtubed “How to use sketchbook on the Mac? ”  and this video gave me the basics and what I needed to know.

Although the experience was tedious, it was really enjoyable when I got the hang of Sketchbook. I watched the third video on the assignment post and that was where I got the inspiration for it. I also added some features that I thought would look cool. Features like the laser beams coming out out the bust eyes. You can still see how I didn’t completely crop out the whole background of the lasers, when I went back to take it out I couldn’t get it to work.

The background, now that I realize, looks like cotton candy which is not what I was going for. I was going for neon colors but thats what came out to be. lol.

Overall, this process was really fun and I just like learning about things I didn’t know about.

Ok , Goodnight!

Logo Concept?

The process of making logos on websites is one tedious job. Every website requires you to create an account so you can save a logo you made. To me it just does not make sense. Why is everything account based on the internet. I didn’t try to make it a big deal what I did is I made a logo from a pre made template of one of the website and before it told me to sign up, I screen-shotted the logo using Command+Shift+4 keys and was able to just get the image of my logo.

Although its very simple, I feel like this is a good start for me.  This is not the finished product or I don’t even know if it will look anything like this. I just wanted to get something done that involved spicing up my website.

I will visit the assignments page on the DS106 website for more ideas and work that can make my website POP!

Hello there. Welcome to my website. Although this is my second post, this is my introductory and welcoming post for all of those who decide to check out my website.

The inspiration I got for the name of my website was actually something that came completely random to me.  is a combination of my first name and then Bodega which is what many hispanics in New York call the corner deli-grocery store.

Example of a Deli- Grocery Store:

I chose Bodega because to me, it means a place where all my information would be stored. Just like the way groceries are STORED in a Bodega. I thought it was creative so when I saw that it was available, I decided to go with it.

For my website I would like it to consist of several things. First, would be the assignments fro my CT 101 class. I want to push myself to publish pieces that I am proud of. Second, I want to write about anything that is getting me hyped up for the week, like new music releases, movies, tv shows, anything that I think is worth writing about. Third, I would like to push out my creativeness. Create logos, designs, edited videos. Taking two classes that constantly make me be creative made me see that I do have that creative side of me, so I wish to expand on that and show it on my website.

For now this is all I have to say. So, thank you for reading, give me feedback if you’d like and I hope to evolve as a story teller in this digital world.

J. Cole

In class today we learned how to create gif using portraits by adding effects to different layered pictures. Following the steps shown in class was easy until I got the error when creating the animation. This is where I had to go back and make sure that all my images were saved on Layer and not the artboard, and to my surprise everything was saved on the artboard. After that small obstacle all I had to do was save for the web and pull up the gif on the web browser and this was my final product.

I decided to do this GIF portrait on J. Cole who is a rapper, producer, amazing lyricist, and an incredible story teller. His songs have actual meaning and you can tell that he means everything he says because of the passion he puts on his albums. J. Cole’s verses and “bars” are also out of this world, on his most recent project “KOD”, which has three different meanings, talks about the problems with drug abuse in the music industry and the effect it can have on the younger generation. He is one of the realest rappers out there right now and every single project he put out has not let me down.
